Choosing a hemlock wood sauna

Hemlock saunas — Mars Sauna

Canadian hemlock is one of the two main woods in our catalogue. It is light blond, straight-grained and largely free of resin, so it gives a clean, bright interior with very little scent. This collection gathers 156 hemlock saunas: 59 full spectrum models, 33 low-EMF carbon cabins, 32 far infrared cabins, 16 red light therapy saunas, 7 US-standard models, 5 traditional saunas and 4 outdoor saunas.

Typical useIndoor infrared cabins, value and mid-range linesPremium indoor cabins and outdoor builds

Hemlock suits buyers who want a neutral, modern-looking interior or prefer a low-scent cabin, and it usually sits at a lower price point than cedar. Red cedar is chosen for its color, aroma and natural resistance to decay, which is why it dominates outdoor saunas. 133 of the hemlock models also list red cedar, so many cabins can be quoted in either wood. Hemlock infrared saunas

Most hemlock saunas here are infrared cabins. Carbon fiber is the most common heater (91 models), followed by full spectrum red glass emitters (64), far infrared (17), red light panels (17) and ceramic tubes (5). Infrared models list an 18–65 °C operating range. Hemlock's light color also shows off red glass and red light panels well, which is why many full spectrum saunas are offered in hemlock.

What to check

  • Certification: 141 models list CE and ETL; some also list ISO 9001, RoHS, TÜV or FSC. Request certificates for the exact build.
  • Traditional heat: 7 models use an electric stove and 2 a wood-burning stove.

FAQ

Is hemlock or cedar better for a sauna?

Both are proven sauna woods. Canadian hemlock is pale, even-grained and nearly scent-free, and usually costs less. Western red cedar has a reddish color, a natural aroma and resists decay, so it is the usual pick for outdoor saunas. For indoor infrared cabins, the choice is mostly about look, scent and budget.

Is Canadian hemlock a good wood for a sauna?

Yes. Canadian hemlock is widely used for sauna interiors because it is stable, straight-grained and low in resin, so it stays comfortable to touch and gives a bright, clean look. It is the base wood for many infrared cabins in our catalogue, from 1-person units to 6-person rooms.

Do hemlock saunas smell?

Hemlock has a very mild scent, much less noticeable than red cedar. That makes it a common choice for buyers who prefer a neutral interior or want to avoid a strong wood aroma. If aroma is a selling point for your market, many of these models can also be quoted in red cedar.

Are hemlock infrared saunas available in 120V?

Yes. 142 of the 156 hemlock saunas list a 110–120V build, and 150 list 220–240V. Rated power runs from 1,100 to 3,475 W, so larger cabins need a dedicated circuit or 220–240V supply. Check each model with the power calculator and confirm with an electrician.
